The chair

Rhona Baird

Opened Brackenwynd in 2011 with two chairs and a second-hand backwash. If a colour has gone wrong somewhere else, this is the chair it gets fixed in.

Colour correction, blondes

Erin MacFarlane

Does the balayage and the coppers. Will tell you honestly if the picture on your phone will not sit on your hair, which saves everyone an afternoon.

Balayage, curly hair

Sophie Lang

Sharp cuts and anything that needs to hold a line. Also the one small children ask for, which tells you most of what you need to know.

Bobs, fringes, children

Callum Dewar

Gents, skin fades and beards. Thursday is his late night, so the last chair goes at half seven.

Gents, barbering

You can ask for a quiet appointment.

Tick the box and nobody will make conversation. No explaining why, no apologising for it, and it does not cost anything extra.

People ask us for this more than anything else on this page, and almost nobody asks out loud.

Ask for a time

We text back the same day with two or three times. Nothing is booked until you reply.

Before you send it

Do I need a skin test?

If you have never had colour with us, yes, and it has to be at least 48 hours before the appointment. It takes five minutes, it is free, and you can walk in any time we are open.

You also need a fresh one if it has been over six months since your last colour with us, or if you have had a reaction to a hair product, a tattoo or henna since. This comes from the colour manufacturers and our insurers, so there is no version of it we can waive.

Is this a booking?

No. It tells us what you are after. We text back the same day with two or three times that work, and the appointment exists once you reply. If you have not heard from us by the end of the next working day, phone the salon rather than assume you are in the diary.

What does a quiet appointment mean?

Nobody makes conversation. You are not asked where you are going on holiday, you do not have to explain why, and it costs nothing extra. Tick the box and it is on the card before you walk in.

Do you take a deposit?

Only on colour over two hours, and it is £20 that comes straight off the bill on the day. Cancel with more than 24 hours’ notice and it moves to the new appointment or comes back to you, whichever you prefer.

Why do some prices say “from”?

Because long or thick hair takes more time and more product. You get the actual number at the consultation, before anything starts. Never at the till afterwards.

Can I bring my kids?

Yes. There is room for a buggy at the front and a box of books under the waiting bench. Under-16s need a parent in the salon for the whole appointment, and we do not colour, bleach or perm anyone under 16.

First haircuts are 30 minutes, and you get the keepsake curl in an envelope.
